The Clean 15 and The Dirty Dozen AND Bread.
I thought I'd do another post about The Clean 15 and The Dirty Dozen because lately I've been encountering a lot of people that don't know what this is and one of the things I am very adamant about is the insistence on organic in my business and in my life. It is the one umbrella thing that over rides, oversees, hangs over, everything I do. This list is such an easy way to keep track of and mitigate the amount of pesticide load you are imposing on your body.
As I continue to learn more about glyphosate prevalence I am becoming more diligent about how I fuel my body and what foods I am purchasing and I think it's so important to pass on a couple very easy ways that any person regardless of how busy they are can do to reduce the pesticide load in their body.

EWG's Shopper's Guide to Pesticides in Produce™, updated every year since 2004, ranks pesticide contamination of 47 popular fruits and vegetables. The guide is based on results of more than 40,900 samples of produce tested by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration. It is important to note that the samples are tested for pesticides after they have been prepared to be eaten. This means the produce has been thoroughly washed and, when applicable, peeled. After these preparations, pesticide residues are still detected on many of the fruits and veggies.

So... here they are!
THE CLEAN 15:
I have kept these handy dandy little lists close for the last several years. Buying organic can be very expensive and this list has made eating organic something that even I can do.
EWG'S GROUNDBREAKING WORK ON PESTICIDE POLICY:
Since its inception in 1993, EWG has fought for consumers' rights to live healthier lives in a healthier environment and I like that.
EWG's very first report in 1993, "Pesticides in Children's Foods," played a pivotal role in Congress passage of the Food Quality Protection Act two years later. The law gave the Environmental Protection Agency the regulatory authority to ensure the pesticides used in our food system are not harming our most vulnerable populations – infants and children. Subsequent EWG research found carcinogenic pesticides in baby food and weedkillers in Midwestern tap water."
Then, there is the other little bit of information that has come up a lot lately in conversations that I have every day selling my organic, vegan truffles and that is the topic of wheat and pesticide load in bread and a couple things have occurred to me... 1/ Most people have no idea what glyphosates are and 2/ There are a lot of people that are trying their damndest to eat well and feed their families well but have no idea just how high the load is in bread and holy hanna, we Canadians consume a lot of bread so we need to pay attention! Most of us send our children to school day after day for the better part of their lives.. until they are 18 with bread for lunch!
If you are reading this and it is the first time you've heard about glyphosates, The Daily Hive recently reported this important information about Glyphosates in their blog and I quote:
Glyphosate, an active ingredient in a household weed killer, was declared a “probable carcinogen” by the World Health Organization’s International Cancer Research Agency in 2015.
According to their research, “glyphosate has been shown to contribute to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma,” an aggressive form of blood cancer and as you may or may not know, this is exactly what my youngest child was diagnosed with at the age of 21. This is just not some internet user's opinion but a peer reviewed, scientific fact.
When tested on animals, exposure to the chemical was linked to endocrine or hormone disruption and adverse effects on the digestive system.
The following items, all contained amounts of glyphosate:

The study revealed that some samples, predominantly the grain products, “were found to contain [glyphosate] levels above Health Canada’s ‘safe’ limits.” and that is because a common practice among grain growers is to harvest and heavily spray grains for two reasons, to increase the dessication process, and also to help keep the grain pest free until sale.
Chickpea and wheat-based products had the highest amounts of contamination; crops are typically sprayed with glyphosate several weeks before they’re harvested.
So, what is the take away here?
Along with your handy little list of the clean 15 and the Dirty Dozen, ALWAYS and I would repeat that ... ALWAYS buy your bread.. organic.
We can't change global practices all at once and maybe some of the legislation around the use of pesticides and particularly glyphosates are not going to change tomorrow but I will say that as a mom or as a consumer, or a wife, or even if you are just cooking for yourself and your own body is the only body you are responsible for... you can do these things to reduce the amount of pesticides being ingested.
